Family sponsorship
Family sponsorship is a program under Canadian immigration that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their close family members to come to Canada as permanent residents. This program is designed to help reunite families by enabling eligible family members to live, work, and study in Canada permanently.
Spousal
Spousal sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada, aiming to reunite families by enabling partners to live together.
It includes those legally married, common-law partners who have lived together for at least one year, and conjugal partners who face barriers preventing them from marrying or living together.
The sponsor must be able to provide financial support for three years to ensure the partner does not need social assistance. This program emphasizes family unity and offers sponsored partners the chance to live, study, work, and potentially become citizens of Canada.
Dependent Child
Dependent child sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children to become permanent residents of Canada, with the goal of reuniting families to ensure children can live with their parents.
This program applies to children under 22 who are unmarried and don’t have children of their own, though exceptions may apply for those over 22 who are financially dependent due to a physical or mental condition.
The sponsor must provide financial support for the child for 10 years or until they turn 25, whichever comes first, to ensure they do not rely on social assistance. This program highlights the importance of keeping families together and offers sponsored children the chance to live in Canada, pursue their education, and in time become Canadian citizens.
Parents & Grandparents
Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada, to reunite families and provide support for older generations.
Sponsors must demonstrate the financial ability to support their parents or grandparents for 20 years to ensure they do not need social assistance.
This program emphasizes family unity and offers sponsored parents and grandparents the opportunity to live in Canada, where they can enjoy the benefits of permanent residency, including access to healthcare and potential pathways to citizenship.
Other Relative
Other Relative Sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor specific relatives, such as a sibling, nephew, niece, aunt, or uncle, to become a permanent resident of Canada, provided that the sponsor does not have a close living relative in Canada or abroad that they could sponsor instead.
The sponsor must prove financial capability to support the sponsored relative for 10 years to ensure they do not need social assistance.
This program focuses on family reunification and gives sponsored relatives the opportunity to settle in Canada, where they can enjoy the benefits of permanent residency, including access to healthcare and the possibility of eventually becoming Canadian citizens.
