Status in Canada
Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian, providing a copy of your hosts citizenship document, permanent resident card, or Indian status card.
Age and Residency
Must be at least 18 years old and currently residing in Canada. This ensures that your host is a legal adult and has a stable residence within the country.

You must also meet the following requirements:
Be Outside Canada When You Apply
To be eligible for the Super Visa, you must submit your application from outside of Canada. This means you cannot apply for the Super Visa while you are physically present in Canada.
Obtain Your Visa from an Outside Canada Visa Office

Meet Additional Entry and Medical Requirements
You must be admissible to enter Canada, which includes passing an immigration medical exam to ensure you do not pose a health risk. Additionally, you must satisfy other conditions set by Canadian immigration authorities, such as having sufficient financial support and valid health insurance.

Super Visa FAQs
The “Minimum Necessary Income” (MNI) for a Super Visa is the minimum income that a sponsor (host) must earn to support a parent or grandparent applying for the Super Visa in Canada. The MNI ensures that the sponsor has the financial means to support their visiting family member(s) during their stay.
The MNI depends on the size of the sponsor’s family, including the visiting parent(s) or grandparent(s). The Canadian government updates these figures annually. As of the most recent update (2024), the following table provides an example of MNI requirements based on family size:
Family Size | Minimum Necessary Income (2024) |
---|---|
2 persons | $36,576 |
3 persons | $44,966 |
4 persons | $54,594 |
5 persons | $61,920 |
6 persons | $69,834 |
7 persons | $77,750 |
For each additional person | $7,916 |
To qualify as a sponsor, you must meet or exceed the income levels specified in the table based on your family size. The family size includes the sponsor, their spouse or partner (if any), their dependents, any other individuals they are financially responsible for, and the parent(s) or grandparent(s) they are sponsoring for the Super Visa.
No, you cannot include a dependent on a Super Visa application.
The Super Visa is specifically designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Each applicant, whether a parent or grandparent, must apply individually for their own Super Visa.
If a spouse or partner wants to accompany the applicant, they must submit their own separate application.
Dependent children are not eligible to be included under a Super Visa application and would need to apply for a different type of visa if they wish to visit Canada.
- Proof of Health Insurance Policy: You must have proof of a health insurance policy from either:
- A Canadian insurance company, or
- An insurance company outside Canada that is approved by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
- Minimum Requirements for the Insurance Policy:
- Validity: The policy must be valid for at least 1 year from the date you enter Canada.
- Payment: The insurance must be paid in full or in installments with a deposit (quotes are not accepted).
- Coverage: The insurance must cover healthcare, hospitalization, and repatriation, with a minimum of $100,000 in emergency coverage.
- Additional Considerations:
- As a Super Visa holder, you should have valid health insurance for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. If your insurance is set to expire before you leave Canada, you may need to renew or maintain your insurance to ensure continuous coverage.
- Be prepared to show proof of your paid insurance to a border services officer when you enter Canada. This insurance is essential to ensure you are covered for any medical needs while in Canada and do not become a financial burden on the Canadian healthcare system.
To come to Canada, there are several conditions that you must meet beyond the basic requirements. Canadian immigration authorities will assess your application to determine if you are a genuine visitor who intends to leave Canada at the end of your stay. When evaluating your application, they will consider:
- Your Ties to Your Home Country: This includes factors like your family, employment, property, and other significant connections that indicate you have reasons to return home after your visit.
- The Purpose of Your Visit: You must clearly state why you are visiting Canada, whether it’s to visit family, for tourism, or another reason. Your purpose should align with the type of visa you are applying for.
- Your Family and Financial Situation: They will assess your financial ability to support yourself during your stay in Canada without working and whether you have family members who depend on you in your home country.
- Economic and Political Stability in Your Home Country: The overall situation in your home country, such as economic conditions and political stability, will be considered. This helps determine whether there is a risk that you might overstay your visa or seek to remain in Canada permanently.
These factors help Canadian authorities determine if you are likely to comply with the terms of your visa and return to your home country when your visit ends.
Yes, even if you are visa-exempt, you can still apply for a Super Visa. If you don’t need a visitor visa to enter Canada, you can obtain a Super Visa, which allows you to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time.
If your Super Visa application is approved, you will receive a letter to present to a border services officer when you arrive in Canada.
Additionally, if you are traveling by air, you may need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) separately.
The eTA will be electronically linked to your passport, so you must travel with the passport you used to apply for your eTA and bring any supporting documents related to your Super Visa application.
A Super Visa is valid for multiple entries into Canada over a period of up to 10 years. However, the key benefit of the Super Visa is that it allows you to stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time without the need to renew your status.
After each 5-year period, you can leave and re-enter Canada for another 5-year stay as long as your Super Visa and passport remain valid.
The cost for a Super Visa application through the Canadian government is CAD $100 for the visa fee. Additionally, you must also account for the cost of medical exams, biometrics, and purchasing the required health insurance, which can vary based on your personal circumstances.
The processing time for a Super Visa can vary depending on your country of residence and the specific circumstances of your application. On average, it can take several weeks to a few months to receive a decision.
At Cantrust Visa, we offer a comprehensive Super Visa application service to help simplify the process for you. Our service fee is $1,000 USD for a single parent and $1,500 USD for both parents.
This includes assistance with preparing your application, ensuring all requirements are met, and providing guidance throughout the process to increase the chances of a successful application.
